The tecnique of the Commesso Mediceo or Inlay (mosaic in stone) is very old and highly complex.

Also known as Florentine mosaic, it was fostered in sixteenth century Florence by the Medici family and brought to perfection over the centuries by the skills of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure which was established in 1588.

It consists in making fragments of colured stone slab less rigid and combining them in wonderful compositions.

Any stone can be used, and every vein or streak can obtain a particular chromatic effect.
